I have a 76 evinrude 55horse that I had given to me last year and it runs great and starts right up. My question is who knows the last time it was tuned or had anything done to it. What should I do, besides changing plugs, to this motor?
1976 Evinrude
Model 55673
I also have a service manual to help me out if I need it.

First, I would get a Service manual, then I would replace the water pump impeller, Breton.

Except for cleaning and gapping (not replacing unless the electrodes are burned up) the plugs regularly and decarbing and replacing gearcase oil annually I am not one to mess with an engine that is performing well.

We get a lot of requests for help here that are caused by over-servicing the engine and making some small error.

Good luck. :)

When I drained the oil before winter there was some water in it, should I replace the seals? Also, what do you mean by decarbing? About how long would it take to replace the impeller and is it necessary? Thanks.

Water pump impellers have a reliable life of about two years, running or not, breton. Though many will last much longer without failing, it is almost universally recommended to replace them at 2 years or less. A failed impeller will disintegrate and plug up your block. Then you have big trouble.

Look up decarbonizing in the Engine FAQ section.

Water in the gearcase? Could be getting past the seals, but the most common culprit is reused gaskets under the drain and vent plugs. Like spark plug gaskets they are use-once crushable. Use new ones for every gearcase service.

Good luck. :)
