Hey all,

First time poster, long time lurker.
I FINALLY got myself a boat.
Picked up an older 12ft Tinner with a 1976 Johnson 15hp on a trailer for a good deal...

I barrel tested it when I picked it up.
It started up nicely, shifted into both gears nicely, revved up nicely.
I didn't notice any burnt paint on the head, but there was some peeling paint on the block.
It didn't pump water at first when I had ONLY the water pickup holes in the barrel. As soon as I dropped it lower into the barrel (just above the lower unit) with the water covering the additional exhaust relief holes it started to spray out water from the upper exhaust relief.
I'm obviously new to outboards but I am fairly mechanically inclined. I plan to do a water pump kit on this very shortly for peace of mind.

I suppose I have 2 questions at this point in time, which I am looking for advice/input on.
1. Does the peeling paint on the block indicate a previous overheat?
2. If the motor is running properly do I really need to worry about a possible previous overheat as per question 1? Or should I just boat more, worry less?

Attached is a video of it running and a photo of the peeling paint:

Thanks for the input in advance.

Cheers,
JohnnyGuy

If the motor is running properly do not worry about the peeling paint. It takes a while for water to come out of the exhaust relief holes on them 10-30 seconds.

Looks more like corrosion than anything else maybe from something making a nest in there. Any overheat discoloration that happens is usually on the exhaust cover and head.

That's what I thought. Thanks for the QUICK reply flyingscott.
