76' Johnson 85hp RPM range

I have a 76' 85 Johnson, I just installed a tach and I was wondering whats full throttle? I've tryed not to run more than 4500. the motor is in great shape. any help would be apprecated.

Depends alot on the prop you're using and your setup, boat, etc... But that is a little low. You should shoot for 5200 to 5700 Id think.

Yeah, you're lugging if WOT is 4500. You want to shoot for the mid 5000 range. You either have some tuning to do, or you're running too much prop.

I read that again.

Are you saying it's 4500 and you've got more throttle to go? Giver all she's got and see what your tach clocks in at.

Thanks, I'll run it up to 5000. It on a 16' center console but I don't know the pich of the prop but it's the "high speed pich" not the one for towing.

What we're saying is you may need to re-prop in order not to lug that motor. If wide open throttle (WOT) is only 5k you're lugging (even at lower RPMs) and need to go down in pitch on your prop.

You try and set it up for 5.5k WOT. You can run it wherever you want after that, but it won't be lugging. It's like avoiding 25mph in your car in 4th gear.
