Hello,
I'm attempting to replace the impeller on my 76 Merc 110 for the first time. Just bought the motor a couple of weeks ago and ran it in a bucket for about 2 mins with a tiny dribble of pee coming out the pee hole. Took the lower unit off and there was only 1/2 of one of the impeller blades left.
I bought the Sierra 18-3446 Kit (http://www.iboats.com/Water-Pump-Kit-Sierra/dm/view_id.173886) which replaces the OEM parts, thinking that I would give the water pump a complete overhaul since the seal plates were showing wear.
I attached a picture of the actual kit I received, and here is a link of a parts diagram that I have been referencing: http://www.boats.net/parts/search/M...3/GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY, COMPLETE/parts.html#
Obviously the pump bodies, impeller, and seal plates are very apparent where they go. I identified and replaced #7 & #31 from the parts diagram (not in the picture of the kit I received). However, the fit on the upper pump body on the shaft seems a little loose which to me would seem to allow water from the pump to pass (replacing the OEM part with a Sierra, but they both fit identically), and none of the remaining 4 seals that I have left (see attached pic) seem to go there. 2 of the seals fit well on the shaft, but there are not steps in the shaft or grooves which would seat the seals. The parts diagram calls for an oil seal and a rubber ring, neither of which were on there when I pulled the LU apart.
The yellow seal and small nylon seal...I think they go on the shift shaft so I'm not too worried about those, I don't plan on doing anything there.
Has anyone ever used this Sierra rebuild kit? The applicable serial numbers are 3795658 thru 4839253. Does anyone know what the top of the pump cover should look like, assembled, before the lower unit goes on? I've guessed at it, as shown in the last attached pictures, since the fit on the shaft is so good. Just worries me that they weren't there before, and without anything to hold them in place, they won't actually seal anything.
Is it a big deal if water leaks past the upper housing (other than losing some pressure in the cooling water loop)?
Thanks for the help!
