I am having a similar problem but no idea where to begin as I may have more problems, I was going along with my 76 omc sterndrive electric shift fine, was going along about 29 mph and it suddenly popped into neutral fastly stopping the boat with my throttle still way up, I brought it back to neutral quickly shutting off the boat, attempted to restart the boat and it barely turning, almost appearing that it was locked up, so I quit trying to start it after a couple tries, after paddling my 23ft boat back to the dock I took it home and charged the battery thinking that could be an issue, attempted to start it and all I get is a clicking noise in a solenoid, im not sure what happened but id love to fix it, I took the outdrive off the boat and retried starting, still just clicks, where should I begin and what do you think happened?

I had the same thing happen to me, but mine would start with the outdrive off. My issue was my uppergear was all gummed up and couldn't turn. Try jumping the starter to see if it's the starter.

Welcome aboard Joshua:

Battery, solenoids and starter all check out okay? You pulled the entire drive off, so the ball gears are exposed coming off the intermediate, correct?

Put a socket and bar on the bolt in the center of the lower pulley on the front of the engine and attempt to turn it clockwise. MAKE SURE THE KEY IS TURNED OFF when you are doing this. This will tell you if there is a mechanical problem with the engine or if the problem is with the starter system.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Pull the spark plugs, 'n see if water back-washed into the cylinders when ya stopped so quickly,....
