First of all guys thanks for this site I woud not have gotten as for as i have without it.
Ok I have read a lot of posts on this and i think i might understand but only want to make sure. I am working on a 1977 140 hp mercruiser and i now have the steering working and the motor running great but it seems to not be in nuetral and it will not shift into reverse, i am sure the shift interupt is not set right but i now know how to do this. oh yea and this is all on muffs but my guess after reading many posts is that the cable is sticking or since i do not know what was done before my getting the boat to work on maybe someone droped the drive and did not get it back in right. Am i going in the right direction, I am still waiting on the owner to get me the manuel. thank anyone for the help

The '77 140 used the MC-1 drive and the manual you will need will be Mercruiser Service Manual#2 which covers the engine and drive.

Probably should get the manual before you get into any adjustments or into the drive.

Ayuh,... That switch should Only work when the boat is In the water....
It shouldn't move, at All, on the muffs...

try to shift into reverse with the engine off and see if it goes in that will tell you something .... it could be the shift cable is adjusted to far to the forward side.... as far as the shift interupt switch it works by cable tension when shifting in the water and kills the engine momentarily so it can shift easier ... dont know of adjustment in it ... more the cable ... could be wrong but i have adjusted a few of them .... good luck

If the switch is moving on the muffs I would bet the short shift cable is bad.

The switch is only supposed to move when coming OUT of gear. It is to unload the pressure on the prop to allow smoother return to neutral.
