Re: '77 140 V4 - High Performance fuel pump?
Not sure what part number pump you received and how you determined that it is a "high performance" pump. Is it a Bombardier pump? What part number? Hard to really veryfy anything unless you are working with a factory service manual. The generic manuals just don't measure up. The original 388268 pump was designed to run the larger 115/140 engines in 1977. There is a long line of supercession (5) part numbers on this pump. The early supercessions probably involved changing to rubber parts that were not affected by the newer ethanol fuels. Today's equivalent factory part is 438556, about $100. None of the older V6 pumps supercede to the same part number as the current 140 hp replacement pump. I'd be careful using that pump if it is a V6 pump. The older V6 engines used two of those pumps, and they are not the same part number. Possible one of those pumps is a lift pump, the second is the pressure pump. Not sure that either one would make a good subsitute for a single pump application. One of the other experts on this board may be able to chime in and fill in additional details. You can check out the original factory parts lists online at: epc.brp.com. It is handy for determining what replacement parts you need and is useful when making repairs also.
