what is the operating temp of the motor. replaced impeller and thermostat, but motor still seems to feel real hot and there seems to be steam coming out of the exhaust. the steam could be the temp out side but unsure. boat pees great at low speeds but not as forceful at high speeds. there is still a steady stream through. i am scared that i will hurt the motor operating it with it running this hot

You should be able to hold your finger tips on the head for several seconds without it burning.

c/6
Hooty

I read somewhere (here maybe?) that temp over about 130 degrees F will feel too hot to touch, but 130 and under are within limits -- so by that logic, you would be running about 130 degrees or less if you can hold your hand on the top of the cylinder head for a few seconds. About 160 degrees is the upper end of the range for normal operation.

I'm not too sure what to make of the reduced tell-tale stream at higher rpms -- would normally see a reduction, if at all, at lower rpms when the system isn't pumping quite as much water. I think the tell-tale indicates that water is getting up to the head, but not necessarily whether water is fully circulating through the head. Getting some sense of the operating temperature of the head is better.

The t-stats used open at 143degrees. Where you check is the flat place on top right behind the head. Course this will go up some at WOT. But as stated before, at idle or a little above, you should be able to touch that flat place for a few seconds and not have to jerk your hand away.

The stream slows down a little probably cause the t-stat opens and gives the cooling water an open route through the engine.
