My problem I am having is that when I raise the motor temporarily to clean off the prop, get off the bottom, whatever, I get a good bit of turquoise colored sludge that leaks out of the upper unit. This only happens when the motor is running or has recently been run. I was thinking it might be fuel/oil leaking from a gasket, but I don't know. I haven't been able to see where it's coming from. I've got some lower unit problems I'm dealing with and I want to know what's going on in the upper unit before I spend all this time and possibly money on a motor that's not got much life in it. Thanks, Roy
First post, Great Site, Incredibly helpful!

Welcome aboard Roy......

Let's start with a basic question. How's the gear case lube look? Any water in it?

Not sure what Turquoise Slug looks like. :D

From where is it draining specifically?

Thanks.

The gear case lube was replaced about a month ago. I haven't checked it since. It looked used, but nothing that appeared abnormal. It's leaking greasy blue mess out of the choke pin hole in the callon (sp?). I really only does this when I tip it. I haven't been able to find a leak specifically so it makes me think the leak is up under something. After I tip the motor back upright, I take off the callon and this mess is all over the place. To be honest, I haven't run the motor while looking for the source of the leak. This has been going on for a while but I have a new lower unit problem and I want to know if it's worth fixing. I have been considering for a while rebuilding the upper unit and replacing all the gaskets, but again I want to know if it's worth it.

Roy, your engine equiped with an electric choke? And by choke pin hole, do you mean where the choke knob goes throuh the lower pan?

Sounds like a solenoid or coil melting down. That's the reason for the above question. Check under the flywheel for any signs of this gunk and check the choke solenoid (if equiped) for the same.

Yes, it does have an electric choke and the hole is in the lower pan. I was thinking that the only thing this "mysterious sludge" could be was the fuel/oil mixture due to the tint of the oil. That sounds like a great idea. I'll get it fairly cleaned up, run it, tip it, and see what I can find. I'll let y'all know what I find. Thanks.

Take the hood off before ya tip it up and watch where the stuff comes from. If from the carb cover, may be a carb issue or just normal leak off from what's left in the carb throat and reed area.
