I have a 77 55hp 2 cylinder that runs and shifts fine. I put new lower unit oil in it at the end of the season before winter lay up. Ran it on muffs the other day in prep to put it in the water this weekend. A day later in the driveway there is now lower unit oil under the skeg. The oil is weeping from the water intake holes. Not the filler holes, and nothing near the prop. So before I go through the trouble of pulling apart the whole gearcase, any thoughts on were this may be leaking. I,m thinking maybe the seal on the drive shaft near the water pump. I was going to replace the pump impeller anyway just as standard maintenance. anything i should look at here. Am I wrong to think if the lower unit seals were bad that oil would be seen in the prop area?? I'd really love to just replace a seal up near the water pump, but dont want to miss something. Thanks for any advice.

are you sure that it is not burnt 2 stroke oil coming from the exhaust? you can pressure test your gearcase. google it. easy.

As said above, have your gear case pressure and vacuumed checked and then you'll know exactly where it's leaking.
