77 Merc 40HP Engine Cover removal

I was looking at a 1977 Merc 40 HP Outboard and couldn't see how to remove the engine cover. There is the similar front chrome cover plate on my 85 HP which has a simple twist knob to turn to remove that and then the engine wrap cover release is exposed. This one is different and I didn't have a lot of time to figure out the removal procedure of that cover plate. As well, are there any engine parts diagrams or repair manuals available on line for this type engine? Info much appreciated.

Hi Bullsi,<br /> If you look under the recoil handle - there should be a small white button. Push it down and the front plate will pop out. Now you can split the wrap-around....<br /><br />- Scott
