my lower unit in my electric shift failed last year, the forward did not engage, so rather than tearing apart my lower unit, which looks like quite the task. I just swapped in another good used lower unit from a marine mechanic.

when I drained my upper while doing the swap the oil in it looked like brand new, no water at all.

anyways, while I had her tore apart I changed the impeller which was damaged, followed my manual step by step and got the entire unit reassembled.

after taking the boat out this weekend, she performed great. I got back home and took a look at all my fluids and the fluid in the upper had some water in it, I stole some ideas from this site and created a pressure tester to help find where it was leaking from, this is the part that has me stumped,

it held pressure and vacuum perfectly, steady for an hour either way.

does anybody have any ideas where I should start looking?

TIA for any help.

model info - 1977 OMC electric shift 175hp with a ford 302

Only thing i can think of is, hows the seal on the upper plud or dipstick? You remove it to pressure test so maybe the seal is bad on it.
