Hello,

I am having problems with shifting, I seem to have lost forward. reverse works fine and I am trying to figure out what the problem may be. I have been doing some searching on this site and from what it sounds like, my 77 is an electric shift.

I am in the process of trying to figure out where the problem lies and I have wiring diagram for the boat and have a couple of questions.

1. I understand that the green and blue wires that come out of the control box are the wires that put 12 volts to the coils that control the shift.

so my question is what wire is the powered wire that feeds the blue\green wire when you shift? it should be coming from the key switch in the 'run position' right?

2. the Previous owner of the boat installed an aftermarket fuel gauge (it is a different brand than all of the other gauges. and after looking at this diagram I have included, I see that there is a red\yellow wire coming from the control box to the sending unit terminal on the gas gauge? I am not one to doubt a manual but shouldnt this wire be coming from the sending unit on the gas tank? why would that be run through the control box?

3. also on my pic I have atttached shows a pink wire that comes form the control box and goes nowhere. it says " Tape pink lead to harness" any ideas on this wire?

I am just looking to be able to troubleshoot my shifter and hopefully this is the problem with my forward shift. Obviously the Green\Blue wires control shift, what other wires in that box are Vital to the shifting components?

thanks in advance for any help on this.

I can't remember which one was which but try disconnecting the power wire to your coil (to keep from burning points) and put the controls in reverse. Take a DVM and see which wire (blue or green) has 12v (black lead of DVM to ground) the other should be forward. Now stick it in forward and see if it has +12v. If it does, you may have a broken drive spring, bad switch in the controls, or the coil or wiring down to the lower unit is bad. Keep us informed on what you find.
