Hi all I searched the forums and Seems like everyone starts asking questions AFTER the lower unit is off. I have a Clymer manual but it's pretty vauge. I wanted to know if I should be putting this motor in F or N when dropping the lowerunit ? I mainly wanted the Unit off and Put some pressure in it before ordering parts. If this is the seal kit (http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=82533F ) ?<br />then I might just order it and replace them all. So anyone have any tips when removing ? Or can anyone point me to a step by step blog ?<br />Thanks !<br />Joe in ohio...

Appreciate the Quick reply...<br />Would you also know what Impellar type I'm looking for ? That gasket kit looks like it includes the waterpump housing seals. So this would be the kit I would always need when replacing the impeller ? Seems a little pricy compared too the others. Or does this kit include some seals when taking the lower unit apart and not off ?

Then impeller alone is 18-3017 all the seals and gaskets for the lower unit are in the seal kit. Everyone has there favorite as far as which gear I like rev. I don't think it matters much as long as the upper and lower shafts are in the same gear.

Joe, I like to use neutral when I drop the LU. Be aware that there are two neutrals, so if you move the shift shaft after removal, be sure you put it into the correct neutral, or your shifting will be backward. Also, I recommend you change the waterpump seals and gaskets, including the waterpump to driveshaft seal located in the pump base, first and then see if it still leaks. The propshaft seals are pretty tough and hold up well, and are a pain in the a** to change. <br /><br />Usually you just buy the pump base replacement kit to get the new driveshaft seals, rather than try to replace them individually. The price difference is minimal or none.

No, to get drive shaft or shiftshaft seals you must order the seals seperatly of a seal kit. If you want just driveshaft seals you could always buy a lower w/pump hsg.

Hey Laddies Where's the Lower with Pump housing ?<br /> I think I'll call Iboats parts help and Order the impeller repair kit and drive shaft seal and shift seals....Would the shift seal be a cause of water in the LU ? Or is it strictly Fill/Vent screws and prop and drive shaft seals ?<br />Laddies you are the man ! <br />Joe.

The shift shaft seals will leak but it's more than likly the drive shaft seals. The lower w/pump hsg. is part number 18-3414 but it's to expencive someone meantioned it in a post so I did the same thing. The seals for the driveshaft are 18-2013 and 18-2007 thats really all you need.

Here's a good parts Diagram can you explain in Numbers what parts I'm lookin for ?<br />( http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury_parts/488.cfm ) Then click on gear housing assembly page 1 That way I can see EXACTLY what your talking about !<br /><br />MOD:I'm not advocating in anyway that I'll be buying parts from this site It;s merely a Way to SEE exactly where they fit !

Joe, first I hate to open any links but I did but my norton or something won't let me open it. If you look at any picture of the pump the impeller is first, underneath it is a plate with a gasket on either side the next part down is the w/pump base or lower hsg. it has a outside o-ring to seal it to the lower unit hsg. and on the bottom the are 2 seals in a receased area the top seal goes lips up to keep water pressure off the bottom seal that the lips go down to keep the lube in the unit. Hope this helps

Re: 78' 1150 Lower unit leak sr# 4858148

Well MAybe I can turn this into a blog for others so that others may benefit. 6 Bolts total. One in front one in back (under a plastic plug) 2 on the sides and 2 under the cavitation plate. I put a wood shim between the 2 halves at the rear of the motor and tapped a few times with a rubber mallet at the front gearcaseuntill the studs bottomed out on the nuts (so the lower Unit didn't drop suddenly) and b4 you know it it slid off ! (scary but necessary) the water tube stayed in the powerhead luckily.....the water tube guide is still attached to the lower unit and could "guide" again.....Unless this is supposed to be sealed ? Anyway I'll post pics and definaely more "?'s" thanks for all the help laddies and Hopefully more to come.<br />PS: I duct'd taped the Prop to the lower unit and marked the driveshaft to the lower unit. This was in hopes to prevent any problems when re-attaching the lowerunit in regards to shifting. is this foolproof ? I should have F-N-R without issue when done ? <br />PS: I left the motor in N before dropping the Lowerunit.<br />Thanks all !!!<br />joe in Ohio

Re: 78' 1150 Lower unit leak sr# 4858148

Joe, When you reassemble, you will need to turn the flywheel until the splines in the crankshaft match the splines on the driveshaft. Now the LU will go on. If both the control and LU are in neutral they too should mesh. Also, put some grease on the driveshaft and shift shaft splines. One more thing. The LU is a tight fit. Take some time and using just your hands, wiggle it into place, after the driveshaft-crankshafts are aligned. If you use the nuts and a wrench to pull the LU onto the midsection, you might break something.

Re: 78' 1150 Lower unit leak sr# 4858148

thanks Chris.....I took the pump off today and the shaft sticking outta the lower iunit spins freely. I've been careful to mark the spline orientation so it could go back on the EXACT way it came off. Since the lowerunit is in neautral wouldn;t it be ok for the driveshaft ( Not Propshaft) to spin not worrying about the splines ? (Just thought about it ...I wont be able to turn the driveshaft because ot'll be inside the main motor !)<br /><br />Here's a couple o' pics...<br />this is the Lowerunit with the waterpump base off of it. I'm almost positive that my problem is a Driveshaft oil seal you can see the "Milk " near it...<br />1: http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=4/10918013727.jpg&s=x11 <br /><br />This is a pic of my Lower water pump housing....It has 1 giant rubber seal in it with small little wire retainers. the one on the outside of the housing I see but should there be another "O" ring below this big inner 1 piece rubber bushing ?<br />2: http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=4/10918042998.jpg&s=x11 <br /><br />Question is If I buy a new lower water pump base and if it comes with this big rubber seal in the middle of it then where are my "Oil" seals ? other than a gasket there were no other seals (o rings ?) below this big one in mid of the water pump base ?<br /><br />O

Joe, both seals are in there but yes if you bought a hsg. the seals are in it. Just go in from the top and use a screwdriver and tap the seals out so you know what your dealing with
