78 35HP Evinrude pops about every 20 -40 seconds on idle

My engine makes a pop sound when on idle, and will die many times then. I replaced the plugs like suggested and started to turn the idle screw to more rich. THis seemed to start to help a little. I tilted the engine up a little to get the fuel pump part # and noticed the carb was about 1/2 inch away from the engine block, it appears that two bolts holding it were loose. Would this separation from the engine block potentially cause the pop I hear and the stalling?

I am going to replace the fuel pump this weekend.

get new gaskets and tighten your carb. Can't believe it even runs sucking this much extra air. Your fuel pump is probably fine

I can't believe it even ran with the carb 1/2 inch away from the block.
