I have a 1978 Evinrude 85hp with power trim/tilt. Today the power trim/tilt stopped working. When I move the thumb switch on the throttle in both directions(up and down)the electric trim/tilt pump runs, but the motor will not move in either direction. As background information....for the six years I have owned this engine the tilt function was a bit noisey, sort of creaky, but it always worked through its full range of motion. The trim worked fine, no noise. In the past week the trim/tilt had slowed somewhat. All of a sudden it totally stopped. I have electric power to my pump, no apparent fluid leaks, and no motor movent at all. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance. Joe

Have you checked the fluid level?

Hope it is your fluid. I just went through this with a 79 85hp. I had to pull the engine from the transom. I had a spring under the pump that was broke in 5 pieces, also had crud in tilt check valve. If it isn't your fluid, I recommend getting a manual if you don't already have one. I would get an evinrude shop manual. It has all the wiring and picture of the hydralics.

My manual under will not trim or tilt in either direction says.
a. pump coupling broken
b. low oil or no oil in pump cavity
You could have other problems in there also if it was noisy. Mine was that way also.
Good luck.

Thanks for the help. My manual says "If the problem is hydraulic refer the repair to a qualified expert." I am going to try to find a manual that covers the hydraulics.

I have somewhat of the same problem te trim and tilt didnt move. Then my brother and I replaced th solenoid in the box and checked most of the wiing and found some really damaged wires. Replaced those and it goes down but wont go up. After removing the motor from one boat to the other we found a bunch of frayed wires outside near the engine and we think this could be the cause of the up situation. We will find out most likely tonight if it stays ic out. Just a little note the solenoid thats use in the 76-80 Evinrude Motors are thesame used for 88 Fords for the starter.
