78 Evinrude 140 what gas?

A couple of small questions<br /><br />What gas does it need?<br /><br />Does it need to be modified to run on modern gas?<br /><br />I have been told anything over 87 is ok. but I have also seen that it need some thing closer to 91 which is the case?

Howdy GGF.<br /><br />Compared to what we had in the 70s, today's gas sux.<br /><br />It might blow your skull, but the best gas we have today is 87 octane unleaded, alcohol free. <br /><br />The higher octane fuels are NOT better quality gas. They are fuels with additives that allow high compression engines run on them. That does not include 2 stroke outboards.<br /><br />Your engine will run on 91 or 93, but you will gain zero benefit from it, unless you consider a lighter wallet a benefit.<br /><br />Good luck.
