ive been working on my 235 for a while now and couldnt figure out why its not charging. I got a wiring diagram and its showing a voltage regulator in the diagram but i cant find it anywhere on my engine. i had to change around a few wires on the terminal strip behind the power pack on the port side, pretty much moved the rectifier wires but im not seeing the regulator. is anyone familiar with the wiring on this engine and could possibly point me in the right direction.

Your 78 engine does not have a regulator. 1980 was the first year for the regulator. As such, your rectifier provides the battery unregulated charge. You will see gauge voltage rise to perhaps 15 or even 16 volts once the battery is charged. Keep an eye on the water level in the battery through the summer on this engine.

that solves a lot of questions. So on that terminal strip behind the power pack there are two little jumpers that connect a couple of the screws together, i cant recall witch ones right now, im pretty sure it jumps the rectifier wires over to some other ones. does this sound correct. ill try to figure out what the other two wires are if that will help. thans for the help

The yellow wire with the gray tracer is the tach signal wire. The wire counts pulses from the stator. It should wind up being a gray wire at the control box. If you ever start to have tach issues, look to the rectifier because you may start to have coincidental battery charging issues.

Does your Tach work? If not, most likely your rectifier is bad.
