sorry i want to replace the positve wire from the battery to the starter, or where ever it goes. Should i put a fuse on the + wire? I ran a jumper and and try to start but the wire was only 14guage and melted fast whats the best way to do it?

The wire goes from the battery to the solenoid and then to the starter. It is very rare for this wire to short out. Are you sure this is the problem? Cant you just follow the wire and see what's it's contacting and then fix it? It seems odd your problem. If you really indeed want to replace it get #4 gauge wire, cut to the right length and crimp on some ends to it.

Re: 78 evinrude 35hp + postive wire

If nothing happens when trying it, it's an open circuit. If it smokes, it could be a short or high resistance in the wire and then yes, you would need to replace it. You can try bypassing it all by using a jumper cable (from a car) from the battery to the starter. If it works fine then checking/replacing the wires is probable if you're sure the solenoid is working.

Disconnect, thoroughly clean, inspect and reattached the battery cables (both cables and both ends). If you see any corrosion where the cable enters the connector either cut the end off and replace the terminal or install new cables. If that doesn't fix the problem then you need to search further.

Are you talking about the battery size cables or the smaller wire going to the solenoid? I ask because you mention a 14 size wire, the cables are at least 6Ga.or larger
