78 evinrude lower unit will this work 79

my 78 evinrude lower unit is pretty much shot(model 35853r) . Will this 79 work? (model number 35953r)

I have no clue how to research it to find out thanks.

Go to shop.evinrude.com and look up the parts charts for both engines. If the part numbers for the parts are the same between the engines, you are goods to go.

You want to look at the LU housing, drive shaft shift shaft and water tube.

with lower units you also want to see if the gear ratio is the same, or at least close enough that you can compensate with prop pitch.

I found a quicker way to look for compatibility, go to boats.net, select a part number, and it shows a list of all compatible motors. in this case, I selected the gearcase assy for your motor, BRP part #389730:
