I have a '78 Johnson 35hp that is very difficult to shift. I have isolated the problem to the shift lever at the motor. (No problems in the lower unit and nothing from the console to the motor) I have lubed it and it works but it is very stiff to shift. The zirch fitting is fine ( I have taken it off and shot lube through it ) but when I try to shoot lube through when it is on the motor it doesn't really take it. I'm having trouble finding how to access the area to better lube it or take it off to see what's wrong. I would appreciate any help or references on this. I have a Clymers but needless to say the pictures aren't good and I really can't find the procedure to remove the whole linkage there. Thanks in advance, Johnny

You have to remove the powerhead (engine) to access it. Fortuneately, it's not that hard, on that engine.

Follow the manuals instructions for powerhead removal. You'll find the shift shaft right underneath.
