Ok motor is 25r78c johnson seahorse. Carbs are cleaned twice, rebuild once and motor is seafoamed. Main issue is unreliable start up. Motor sometimes, fires right up, sometimes it takes 20 minutes of work to fire it up. It also does not want to idle and stalls "new problem, happened right after seafoam" I took the carb out yesterday and foud out that the needle does not work perfect, I mean when you move the float up and down 5 times, it sticks in its closed place about 3 times, out of those 3 times, 2 of them it falls back down after a split second and onc I have go there force it out. The needle came with the carburator rebuilt kit, that I obtained from a local outboard shop that charged me $30 "rip off" for the pack and sweared that it was original parts. The pack did not have any identifitying numbers on it, seemed generic and had bunch of parts that I did not need, also the needle is squared and light eventhough the original one was round and heavy. The new squared needle has a little cut area one th bottom and the kit also contained a tiny spring. Anyway I rebuilt the carb using the instrutions and since then have all these issues. Now I am thinking if the needle is squared, the kit should have a seat that matched it, or the needle should be the same specs as the old one. I feel like the new chineese needle is not machined as smooth as the original part which causes the occasional stickyness.

I am looking for input from you guys to decide if what I think is correct. Also where can I get a FACTORY seat and needle for this motor.

Ok after a little searching I found iboats parts section

Does 0387856 KIT AY,CARB REPAIR
63 [0390134] contain needle and the seat?

I also found
32 0378895 L/P 14.65 $12.85
33 0301996 WASHER $1.25 $0.94

which looks like the washer and needle, or needle, seat and washer all together
here at

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/JOHNSON/1978/25R78C 1978/CARBURETOR/parts.html

So which one should I get? oh motor number is 25r78c

That second kit looks like the one I got, except mine did not have a new float with it. I did not under stand what that 3rd gasket looking thing was supposed to do. Does it matter which kit I get? One is $10 bucks more, but is it beter parts?
Well currently I attached a wire strain where the spring was supposed to go, which connected the float to the needle. However it still does not want to start or run right all the time. Its still occasional.

The best repair kit is the new OEM one with the float: kit #0396,701.

The clip needs to be correctly installed. It is best to replace both the seat and the needle as a set so that the new rubber tip on the needle is not compromised.

If you did not install the wire clip do you still have it? That may solve the problem without buying another rebuild kit.

Is this the same part that you mentioned?
http://www.jmsonline.net/CARB-KIT-396701-J-EW-FLOAT.htm

It says 396701 and its a carb kit and I can order it online, it is kinda hard for me to get it thru a dealer since my closest one is in catalina island :).

As far as the clip, I dont have it, me and my friend used a small piece of wire and attached the needle to the float however the boat is still having runnig issues. I am thinking either the wire solution did not work right or the original seat, which was not replaced during rebuild is not fitting the needle right.

Ps: Here is my original carb rebuild thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=296337&highlight=78+johnson

it looks like i did replace the seat...
