Got a 78 Mercury 402 40 hp 150 compression on both cylinders, new fuel pump, rebuilt carb, water pump, stator, and now switchbox. Ran good a week ago but was hard to start and died several times. Now ran for a minute then died not to start again. Checked tdc and Mark lined up, voltage was high from stator so put new switchbox on. Found the Killswitch wire(orange) had 2 volts engine on disconnected it and regained stronger spark. Now the timing was retarded and rpms 1800-2000 so advanced it to the 5 degree mark, with the carb closed, and it still ran at 1800-2200. I'm getting 180 peak volts at both coils (green to ground) and the red from stator to ground reads 166 the blue from stator to ground reads 250 peak volts now. I ordered a new trigger and coils can anyone help me on this cause I'm almost at a dead end.
