78 Merc 900 - trash it?

I burnt a cylinder in my Merc 900 (90 hp). Dealer says it is probably not worth repairing. Is that consensus? I was offered $50 for it from a "junk" dealer. It has all the old controls and is very tough to replace the motor on this boat. Expert thoughts on my predicament?

You might look around for a inline 6 with a bad bottom end for a doner engine

$50 is cheap. I routinely pay $200 to $250 for a dead core to part out - most people do.

You do have options depending on how much you like this motor and want to save it. The dealer can't fix it economicly, but some indepandants could do it.

A 115 powerhead is very (more) common and will bolt right up. If you price out a new 90hp Merc, your repair options look better and better.

-W

I think this one is for sale. I don't think I want to mess with it. Don't have that much in it and not really interested in a lot more. This is hanging on a 16.5 ft. 78 Bonanza tri-hull on a Shorelander tilt trailer. Would I be stupid to accept $400 for the whole packaage?
Learning.. at a cost!

For *me* the boat/trailer makes it less valuable. But I think you'll get that much OK.

-W
