Runs at moderate to full throttle like a scalded dog, idles fairly well, but when it's idling in neutral, it likes to stall when first put into gear. Carbs all thoroughly cleaned with carb cleaner. Starts easy. When making power, runs excellently on all six. In fact, on a 14' boat, it's scary fast. Idle speed is (estimate) between 1000 rpm and 1200 or so.

But the stalling is a pain. First place to look????

Your idle speed is way too high, you are going to destroy the gears if you leave it there. You should be able to get the idle to around 700 in neutral and 500 in gear. It sounds like someone has tried to "fix" a poorly running engine at low speed by cranking up the idle. There are a few things that can make it idle poorly and stall when put in gear, I will list them in order of likelyhood.
1. Idle mixture too lean
2. bleed restrictors missing (overheated at some point and they fall out and get "consumed" by the motor.
3. worn reed valves
4. carb and timing link and sync.
5. float setting and or worn needle and seat.
6. all of the above, it is a 1979.

idle speed must be set with the boat in the water, and the motor running, in gear. yes it will idle faster in neutral, and on muffs. the object is to get it to idle as slow as possible with out stalling in gear. the motor also has to be properly tuned before making these adjustments.

Strong liklihood. The idle speed, BTW, was just a guestimate on my part, and probably high. Oddly enough, it does idle fairly well, smooth for a two stroke, and will do so for quite a while. Looks like I got some work to do.

Do a Link and Sync. I had a 79 inline and it responded very well to having the link and sync done once in a while. It's the best prevention of grenading those motors.
