Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum but here i go. I love to fish so i stubled upon a 1979 chrysler striper, tri-hull with a 700Skier(709h9) also on the plate is the number I900 or 1900. I am looking at the outboard and i was hoping anyone had any information on it, not much i could find online. I am, fairly mechanicaly inclined and would also like to keep the outboard running right. I am not looking for someone to hold my hand just a few tips, and maybe a point in the right direction. I appriciate any help and look foward to contributing to these forums.

Go for a ride before buying. Compression should be at least 125 on each cylinder. Biggest problems with these motors is finding ignition parts. coils are hard to find. If you cant do a compression pull the plugs and look at the tips. Make sure all the plug tips look kind of black grimmy and oily. A clean plug is a bad thing. If you buy the motor go to the chrysler crew and buy a downloadable parts and service manual. If not from them try ebay for a clymer manual for chrysler.

Thanks for the reply. the compression is good right around 130 across all three cylinders. I also took it for a spin, motor ran great although i kept it at very low speeds in the no wake zone and it turned off on me. I waited a few minutes and it started right back up. I bought the boat. the hull is in great shape and boat is very well kept. It belonged to an older gentleman who informed me it was a great little fishing boat. I would love to get this old chrysler running dependably. Is there any type of preventative maintence needed to be done to make sure i dont have to row back to the dock. I would greatly appriciate any help.

thank you

When these Chryslers were made we were using leaded gas with no alcohol. Not only that gas was made much better. Chryslers typically run well once you can get beyond idle. They tend to gum up in the idle circuits in the carb and can be problematic if you are not using fresh gas. Getting it to idle should be an easy task.

Chances are the fuel pump should have a new diaphram installed (real easy) and the carbs may need a bit of work to get the idle passages clean. Impeller in the lower unit should be replaced and oil in the lower unit should be drained in the fall and refilled prior to storage. Never store an outboard in an environment that can freeze without removing and replacing the lower unit oil.

Your carburetors have a mixture adjust screw just above the choke plates. This is a recessed standard type screw head. If you turn it clockwise counting the turns till it lightly seats keep that amount of turns memorized then remove the screw and spring counter clockwise till it comes out of the hole. Spray WD 40 or Carb cleaner in that hole using the straw attachment provided with the can of spray. Put the mixture screw back in to lightly seated then back off how many turns you counted ( Should be around 1 full turn to around 1.5 turns). This controls how lean your carb is mixing with air. You want to run the motor slightly rich more toward the counterclockwise. When you remove the spark plugs after running you want to see a slightly wet grimy plug. If it is dry the mixture is set too lean and you can run a risk of burning out the motor.

Get the service manual and post any questions you have here and someone will help. Good luck and enjoy your boat.
