79 evinrude 85 hp no water out ports

Hey guys,
New to iboats, looks like i will be on here alot beings I just purchased a 79 starcraft with a 79 evinrude 85 hp outboard. My first question is: I bought this from our friends and they put a new impeller in it 2 years ago but I decided after reading the posts on here that it would be a good idea to put a new impeller in it since it didn't go out in the water last year. The impeller that was in it looked great but of course I put a new one in since it was apart. So now when I start the motor with the ears on I get lots of water out of the middle of the prop but nothing out of the 2 holes up by the top of the lower unit where it meets the cover. I am assuming these are exhaust ports but shouldn't I get some water from them? Everything else inside looked great when I pulled it apart. While it ran for about 5 minutes I shifted it in and out of reverse and forward and all the water was still coming out by the prop. I touched the head the whole time it was running and it never got warm. Am i just being paranoid or should I do something else? Thanks alot in advance for the help. if you changed the impellar and did it correctly you should have water coming out of the tell tale or pee hole at the base of the cowling...this would tell you that you are definitely sending water up to the jackets...

sometimes if you put the key in incorectly the impellar may not be spinning...you are certain the pump is back together well? you lined up the water pickup tube??

did you get the pee or tell tale?? If not I would drop the lower unit again to be sure the pump impellars are turning the right way and that the key and orings and such are in correctly. Not saying you didnt do it right but as a precaution i would do at least that.

I was really carefull when installing the impeller and i made sure the cpooer tube lined up with the hole in the water pump. I bent all the fins clockwise when looking down from the top but was told if I got it wrong it would correct itself. When i lined the impeller and key up i made sure it was locked in good on the shaft. My neighbor did tell me when I first brought it home he was standing back there when I fired it and he saw water coming out the two holes on top but it stopped after about 30 seconds?????? Wondering if maybe something could have plugged up or something up in there???? I could feel the cold water when I put my hand up on the head when I first started it and then it never got past warm to the touch. Thanks alot for the response. I will fire it again and see if water comes out. Are the tell tales oe pee holes the two ports up there where exhaust comes out?

If you are talking about the 2 round holes just under the engine cowel, with the engine out of water on muffs, you will not get much out of the exhaust ports because of lack of backpressure on the exhaust housing.
You should have a stream of water out of the indicator on the rear starboard cowling.
By being able to hold your hand on the cylinder head, I would think your water pump is working.

Well guys, I'm a moron. I walk backout to pull the lower unit to see what was going on and laying on my bench is the exhaust housing!! I forgot it in my haste to slap this baby back together. So i dropped the lower unit and put it back and sure enough it's all looking good!! Thanks guys for the advice and i do have a pee stream in the front of the lower unit, I guess thats what your talking about. thanks again
