Hello fellow boaters, I have a 79 Grady with a 5.7 Volvo Penta and what appears to be a 280 outdrive the tilt is a worm gear configuration. I am having a problem with it going up but not down in less I switch the wires then it goes down but not up. I disassembled the top of the worm gear black box and found to relays. I switched them to see if it would operate the opposite but it still continues to go up but not down unless I switch the wires .........any help would be appreciated. Also where can I find an old style trim tab module? Thanks

If its a 280 then the wiring link is below
http://boatinfo.no/lib/volvo/manuals/aq280-dpc_drive.html#/166

Since it goes up and not down, I would think your limit switch/relay is bad. On the right hand page of the link you will see item 8 which is the limit relay, and item 10 which is the trim limit switch. So either the switch or the relay should be the issue.

Also there should be a trailer button item 9 which bypasses the limit switch but still uses the relay

Thanks for the help. I changed the relay and now it starts to go down but only slightly. I guess when the limit micro switch plunger comes out it kills the power. so I am thinking bad switch. But having trouble finding one. Tough to find parts for this application.

The limit switch should have nothing to do with down, it is only used when going up. Need to measure voltage when the button is pressed to see where your loosing it

Thanks for the tips on my tilt all fixed ....... wound up being bad grounds.........seems like wiring problems throughout the boat a lot of work ahead of me.....I do have another problem relating to the Engine cooling........I am overheating intermittently temp goes up and the lower hose gets sucked in. Kind of like the engine needs to burp but the coolant is full......thinking of putting wire in hose to stop that but don't want to mask the real problem.......What do you think? Thanks for the help!

Do you have closed cooling with a heat exchanger, or raw water cooling? When does the cooling problem happen? Idling? or at speed on plane? or more random than that?

There are some components between the intake grates and the raw water pump that can "leak", and when on plane the pump can lose prime.

closed system .......at speed on plane......never at idle ..........risers always stay cool even after gauge goes up .........I have to say I closed up the outdrive raw water supply and installed a thru-hull clam shell and I get awesome raw water cooling through the risers.....in fact the water pressure at the exhaust shoots water out about ten feet at idle......maybe too much?

With a closed system it does sound like a bubble in the closed circuit. If no coolant comes out overflow, then probably not a head gasket blowing compression in. I can see that burping out some coolant, then sucking the hose down as it cools. But coolant would be coming out somewhere.

How confident are you that the thermostat itself is working smoothly? Maybe could remove it and see if problem goes away. Of course replace it anew as soon as troubleshooting is completed.

Good luck!

Just thinking about that clamshell, needs to be in a good spot that will always be drawing in "solid" water and never any foam or bubbles.

possible defective thermostat,,,,,,,going to change the lower hose to one with a spring so `changing the thermostat won't be a problem . but if the t stat was bad wouldn't over heat always not just at speed?

Sounds like you have air in the block. Need to get it out

Take some extra coolant along and maybe run it some with the pressure cap loose? Another thought, is the pressure cap correct rating and working?
