I have a 79 Mariner 140 Outboard that runs great once it's started. The problem is for the last couple of outings when I turn the key to start it it just clicks once. I have been turning the key on/off several times and it eventually turns over and starts fine.

Any suggestions on what is happening?

Most probably the contacts in the starter solenoid are poor.

Test this with a test light connected to the starter terminal and ground.

Turn the key, when the starter fails hold the key and look at the test light, if it is not lit order a new solenoid.

If the test light IS lit, it is time to rebuild the starter.
