79 mer 200 20hp Remote steer to tiller

Any help is welcome!! I want to install my tiller handle in the merc and I can't see a way to get to 3 bolts that hold it on and of course the shift rod. It is setup for remote now. It looks like I can remove the main motor form the swivel bracket, but the shift rod will have to be removed. Can I get the shift rod out through the bottom or must I remove all from the top. From the top looks like I will be doing open heart surgery. Is there an easier way. Is this the correct way to install? Thank you

Dunno, but I'm wanting to do the reverse on the same engine, tiller to remote...
the main issue is I need the brackets to go to remote...
