Seems I got a problem with a bad switch box (power pack). Only 1 of 3 are firing on one pack. I switched that pack with the lower one and it's definitely the pack thats wrong. Does anyone know if they are repairable and how to do it? If not would you recomend buying a used one?

Thanks

Hey doc, I noticed that these switch boxes are put together like one solid unit, not to be taken apart. All mechanics told me that these things cant be repaired internally. I would like to know how if you got any scematics... I'm good with that stuff, I learned how to tweek a CB when I was 8.

If the Powerpack and Switchbox are the same thing,
Mine has been recently replaced at about $400.AUD
by previous owner and it is what looks like a flat polyester resin filled unit, with 13 terminals on it. It doesn't look very repairable to me.

http://www.myfishingpictures.com/watermark.php?file=527/1413wire-med.jpg
BTW Excuse the green wire (should be white)... :D

Re: '79 Merc 115 switchbox trouble

Thanks everyone for the replies. The pack is one solid piece and certainly doesn't look repairable. Unicorn thanks for the pic. My 2 packs are different. One is like yours with the resin filled look and the other is black metal encased. Anyways looks like I'll try to pick one up through the net.

Any ideas how it may have broken? Voltage surge? Faulty ground? etc... I don't want to have to replace it again if the cause is somewhere else.

Looks like they go for $380 in Canada...OUCH!!

Re: '79 Merc 115 switchbox trouble

Mercury switch boxes just tend to fail. I suspect this is the reason that some of the switchboxes are on their 30th revision. I've disassemble a few switch boxes and have found that often the groud connetion which is soldered to the box casing has come undone.. I'm sure this causes the rectifiers in the switch box to blow.. Also I'm sure that an over heat situation does damage to both switch boxes and especially stators since they are right on top of the motor taking in all that heat.
I can see no way to fix switch boxes..

You can tell which revision you have by the last number that is after the letter (usually A)of the part #.

A1 boxes are going to die any day now...

I know I've seen A27.. that is the 27 revision since the A1 switch box..

Maybe Merc should have someone else make their electrical components..
