Re: 79? Merc 7.5 broken pull rope kills my day of Springer fishin
This is something you can fix yourself. Get new rope(unless old rope broke near the end, then you can re-attach it to the handle.) You will have to take it apart. You will see a pully sort of thing. There is a a band spring behind that pully. Hopefully the spring has not came disconnected from the pully. Don't try and pull the pully from the spring! You will have to rotate the pully in the opposite direction the pull cord move to start the motor. You have to "wind up" the pully(turn it several times until it get's tighter and tighter, always holding the pully from returning back. Once wound up you will have to insert the pull cord and attach it. Once attached you can let go of the pully and it should pull the rope in a wind up on the pully. You will have to wind the pully up quite a bit to put alot of pressure on the spring because when you let go the pulling in of the rope will reduce the spring tension as more rope goes in. Now to test you will just pull the rope and it should return in the housing quickly. If it goes in, but not all the way you will need to wind the pully tighter.

When you have it apart coat the rope with wax to ensure it will not break anytime soon.

Some ropes attach in the pully by pushing the rope through a hole and making a knot. Others will have a key with notches on it. This type will require you to put the rope through the hole, then insert the notched key, then pull back on the rope until the notched key wedges itself on the housing and the rope.

If you happen to pull it apart and the spring FLINGs all over... grab a box of patients and re-attach the spring and wind up by hand. Hard part is winding it up tight enough to get it back in without letting go of it. The key here is to remove the housing without letting the spring fly out. Keep pressure on the pully towards the spring so it can't fly out and re-wind. Get yourself a c-clamp or something to hold it once you re-wind it so you can insert the cord without worry of it unspringing.
