79 Mercury 90 hp

I had a problem with my water pump so i changed it out. The only problem is that it is an EZ_ shift and i moved the shifter to the forward position like you would for a type 1 or 2 shift. When i cranked the motor the propeller started to spin. What can i do to correct this mistake. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank You very much.

are yousure it's in gear. the thrust of the exhaust can cause the prop to turn .

Yes it will only go forward whether you put it in neutral forward or reverse. Even when i crank it the propeller will turn.

I did the same thing as you but I have a 1981 90hp and I took mine in the water without checking it first! Only has forward gear, can't figure it out and the manual does not help.

A '79 Merc 90hp lower unit is garden-variety Mercury, nothing exotic or mysterious about it. You just need to get the shift shaft properly oriented and it'll shift correctly.
