Hi iboats!!! Im a new member and excited to join this forum! I recently traded an old car for my first boat, a 79 rinker ??? with a mercruiser 898 v8. Im told this is the same engine as a chevy 305...? The boat was running less than 2 years ago and the previous owner said all it needed to get running was new points and a coil. Ive read threads about points but am a rookie and hope to get some advice while I tackle this project. I'll post pictures later today with more detailed questions! Looking forward to any input on the condition of boat, model, where to get parts, painting, and especially the engine! Hope everyone enjoys following this project as I have enjoyed many on this website! Thanks!!! Pics Soon!!!!!!

Yea I got those files and do appreciate it! That is going to be a lifesaver. I was just hoping to see what this thing looked like brand new. I have not even found any pics on the internet of the same boat with a covered bow. I'm working on it again today and will try to put some better pics up.

Re: 79 Rinker Project w/ mercruiser 898

I am also wondering if anyone knows things about this boat like if its wood or all FB stringers and what the buttons do on the side of the throttle. There is two holes on back of boat finger size, top is connected to pump below engine, bottom is just drain for h20 under engine. should the lower hole have a plug??? it seems like if i put it in the water the lower hole would allow water to fill in. im only 3 days in to this thing and just got it cleaned up enough to start learning details. The engine appears to look ok but things like coil and points were removed and wires are disconnected but its all there. there are little cracks around the snaps and on top fiberglass rim. the side panels need to be replaced along with carpet and hopefully not whole floor. could small cracks around snap spots be due to rotted side panels/are they very important for support? can i just remove them to rebuild new without supporting the boat or will it be fragile without panels and floor? thanks for bearing with me.

Last question before i head out. is there a decent wood to replace rotten teak that i could get from hardware store? can i just use pressure treated lumber? or where to get cheap teak boards that i can cut to spec. Thanks for help!

Are you sure the rotted wood is teak? Teak ages well even when not maintained, just changes color and texture even in salt water and direct sunlight. One reason it is not cheap :)

No other natural wood resists rot like teak -- / if you are considering using something else & you want it to last the std practice is the wrap it in one of the fiberglass resins-- Check out the restoration section of Iboats for more details on that.

Also -- I noticed in your pics that the pulleys look rusted. Those tend to cause rapid wear on the fan belts if pitted from rust and not fixed or replaced. I had good luck using a POR-15 starter kit to save mine. It dries much harder than any rattle can spray paint would.

One thing that may help in your search for information on your boat is to understand all the different forums here at iboats.
This forum is the one you want for engine and drive information, but you would get a lot better answers to boat related question by posting over in the Boat Topics and Questions (not engine) forum. Might even find pictures of a similar boat.

Thanks for info! I'll use this forum for only engine questions now and try to explore the site. I just got the mess of wires sorted out and used the wiring diagram to get it all hooked up. I was told the coil and points were bad by the previous owner, but a mechanic friend said to clean them and try it out before replacing. Im ready to give it power and see what happens but just my luck I broke the only key i had to the boat! Is there no other option than buying a new key switch? this por-15 is just like a paint? so i scrape off what rust i can and then paint it on? will it not dry thicker and then mess up belt connections? Im also still confused about what the buttons on my throttle control do. there is 1 on front bottom 1 on back top and 2 on top front. thanks!

Rinker...Welcome to the boating world.

Just by some of the questions you are asking. I would recommend doing alot of research and reading on I/O type of Boats... on how they work and operate.

iboats is a great place to learn and ask what you dont know...Alot of knowlege here! .......Resto/motor/outdrive forums

Good Luck!

Good grief man, slow down and think for a second.

In one sentence you asked 5 or 6 different questions.

Start a new thread for each question, then you will get replies for that question only, and it won't be a jumble of a bunch of different questions and answers all in the same thread.
