I have a 2003 8.1 Gi-EF serial # 4012106222 it turns over just fine but won't start. When I turn the key to the ON position the fuel pump doesn't run for a couple of seconds like it should. I have checked the fuel pump fuse, relay the driver safety switch everything checks out fine (read on iBoats those are the normal causes). I replaced the fuel pumps 2 years ago and while testing all of the above connected the pumps directly to power and they run just fine. Haven't bothered to check for spark yet because I know the fuel pump isn't running so whats the point.

Both batteries are fully charged and turn the boat over just fine. Just to be sure I replaced the fuel filter to check for water in the gas since it is the full tank from last fall and gas was dry.

The problem started out on the water last weekend, at first cruising about 2000 rpm and went to accelerate and engine started sputtering and died. Wouldn't start and no fuel pump when switched to on, checked fuse and relay then tried the key again heard fuel pump and tried to start and it started. It did the same thing 3 more times. Then stranded me, got towed back to the boat launch and did all the checks above.

Any ideas? I haven't been able to determine a way to test the ECU without going to the mechanic and hoping that isn't the issue as I have seen what they cost.

You said the relay is good - does the fuel pump relay click when you turn the key on? If so, for some reason lately I have seen the wire harness clip on the fuel pump come loose... maybe...

No click when I turn the key on. I tested all the plugs that the relay plugs into and all connect to power or ground except one that if connected to ground would activate the relay. No change on it when the key is switched on or when cranking.

The problem turned out to be a bad engine fuse block. According to other posts I had read as well as the service dept it is a somewhat common problem with the the VP engines from the early 2000's. The service dept also mentioned that the ECU in the 8.1 is pretty bullet-proof as they could only think of 2-3 they had to replace over the years.

Now I just have my fingers crossed VP will take back the ECU we bought from them and didn't use!
