I bought an Ebbtide 2440 w/8.1 Volvo last summer. Absolutely love the boat. Bought it with 19 hrs on it and put 60 hrs on it. Towards the end of summer it felt like there was a vibration in the back of the boat. The screws on the ladder cover on the swim platform vibrate loose. Didn't know how freaked out I should get. don't remember the vibration being there earlier in the summer. Treat my boats w/ TLC. Any suggestions or am I paranoid?

Going to have to some more digging - is the vibration there in Forward, Neutral, Reverse? At a specific RPM, or all over? How about whether you are cruising or just accellerate from a standstill? Is it normal engine vibration, or more in the outdrive? I know I'm not helping, but we're going to need more info to troubleshoot. Better to be alittle paranoid and stop a problem while it's still small.

prop is like brand new, not a nick on it. Seems like I noticed it forward gear only. My wife who usually knows nothing about the mechanics of anything until it falls apart thought "something is vibrating". Props feels tight. Didn't know if there was anything I can look to while I have it in the shed for winter. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Gobbler,

What drive does it have?
If it only vibrates in forward it is not the engine.
If it is a Volvo composite drive (can't remember the Volvo Product code) they are a nightmare, mine started a faint vibration before snapping the drive shaft. I have had one replaced by Volvo under warranty 2 rebuilds and now in need of a third but have opted to change both to a different drive unit.
If it is in the shed for winter pull the drive apart and check for water ingress (milky oil), again the composite drives are notorious for tearing the bellows and cracking gimbal rings

Was your drive tilted all the way down?
Was it during a turn?

We need more info so we can help you.

Also, you should be pulling your drive every year so do that as well to see if there is water in your bellows and to check the condition of your u-joints.

I have a vibration problem with my 5.7GXi (see post) Is your engine still under warranty? If so video it vibrating and kick up a stink with Volvo. They have told the dealer to pull the drive now...The dealer thinks Volvo know about a drive coupler problem on the SX drives but are keeping quiet about it...

Re: 8.1 Volvo vibration

I appreciate your suggestions. Love the boat forum. Drive is not all the way down, although I do have to trim this boat down alot further than I did my Chaparral Sunesta 210. Drove that boat for 10 years, and still had people ask me if I got a new boat. I am familiar w/ an over trimmed or an over steering vibration. I had the marina change LU oil this fall, although levels were consistant, and oil consistancies were pure when I checked them during the summer. Does counter rotating duoprop answer your question on what type of drive. Not sure what a composite drive designates. I am in the process of building my manshed (or toyshed as its has been called) so I am looking forward to spending more time with the boat once I get it at the house.

G'Day Gobbler,

The composite drives are model code XPD, they are a composite (fibreglass) leg rather than the usual alloy. They don't corrode but do cause no end of other problems including corrosion as they isolate current flow. They are not fitted with any protection from fishing line or rope at the back of the prop's, check by pulling the prop' and look for line wrapped around the shaft, it works its way through the seals very quickly.
The drive oil should be changed every 12 months at minimum as per the oil manufacturers specifications.
