My motor was running fine but now!.....it shuts down under full throttle! I have new gas line, filter, and tank!, after it shuts down you have too pull you're guts out to get it to run again and it will only run for a few sec, and it keeps cutting off.Getting worse all the time!
DO you think that I need a fuel pump?, and Please tell me how to check the coils and does this motor have points? Thanks for all the help you can give me
zztrapper

Actually, that should be an 87 model. The last letter is a model run number. CU is the year.

When you say the engine "shut down" at WOT, do you mean it suddenly just stopped running altogether, or did it slow down first, then stop?

NO, it didn't slow down first. When it does start its only running slow and acts like it running fat, anddoesn't won't too take gas! the only way i can get it running again is to take the carb apart and start all over again. The motor will run goog then for about 10 to 20 min and then do the same thing.
I have rebuilt the carb and cleaned all the trash out and set the float level.
Idon't know what to do now so I ordered a new fuel pump to try

Have you tried squeezing the inline primer bulb to see if it will continue to run. This might indicate faulty fuel pump.

Let's see if I have this straight. You take the carb apart, clean it and it runs OK for awhile. How many times have you done this?

If it's more than a couple, you have some junk floating around in your fuel system, probably from the tank.

Empty the tank and replace the hose and bulb. Inspect the interior of the tank thoroughly, looking for any crud that's in there and clean it well. Fresh gas and oil. Clean the carb once more.

I'll bet it works OK after that.

I have a new fuel line and pump and have taken the carb apart 10 times. The last time I took the fuel pump apart and flushed it and put it back together and it ran in the drum for 45 mins, so I loaded up the boat with all my fishing gear and took of to the river and when I tried too start the motor it just would idle and cut back off!I ordered a new fuel pump last week and going to try that this week !
I don't think its the coils because it does it cold!
Thanks for any help!

Hmm...it sounds like you've gone through the fuel system pretty thoroughly. Have you actually test the output of the fuel pump?

Actually, this is beginning to sound to me more like an ignition problem and that your little outboard is running on one cylinder, which would produce the symptoms you describe.

Have you checked for good spark on both cylinders? What plugs are you using, and when did you last install new ones?

How about compression? Have you checked that?

Well, I've never worked on that carb, so I'm not sure of the float setting. Sounds like it's time for you to buy a manual. It also sounds like flooding has been your problem all along.

Hope it works out OK for you.
