I am accustomed to the older mercs so this Tstat thing is new to me. So my first question is what role does the thermostat play. Does the tstat cut off the tell tale when it opens? model is E35elcsm.
Now Ive decided to change it out only to find it not there which brings me to my next question, which is in what order does the seal, retainer, tstat and spring fit into place.
Now I have both the clymer and official service manual and both say very little and show different placement of the seal and retainer?

Drill down to your exact motor and check out the exploded drawing.

It's interactive so if you click on a part number it will scroll the lower screen to the description.

No the thermostat does not affect the tell tale at all. In fact, there is no way for the operator to know when the 'stat opens or closes. (You don't know when the one in your car does either).

I have two different parts blow ups that show the seal in different places, and since I didn't have one in there to take out I have no reference.

As someone else said, there is a a water bypass. Water will still flow from the tell tale when the thermostat is closed. A lot of people remove it and run without one but it is not good for the motor. Constant water flow can make it run under temperature and cause weird problems. It also lets the engine warm up evenly.

Are you sure that is not the seal that is on the thermostat itself? Its the same thermostat that goes in all the outboards i have, according to its part number, and all mine just drop in there. It should just come as one piece. If you have ever changed a thermostat on a honda, it is very similar to that, just smaller.

That setup is slightly different than what I have. Part #20 appears to be the seal that is on the thermostat itself. It goes around the rim and seals the thermostat. Parts 97 and 60 dont appear in the diagrams for my engines. Are they just part of the thermostat?
