the engine won't get over 5mhp in the water. I had several shops look at it and have had several opinions. the carbs have been rebuit it has a new wiring harness new plugs. the last place told me the stator was bad but another told me in this model the stator is only used for charging and has nothing to do with the ignition system. He said that he could charge the stator and it would run fine. I am just wondering if he is really charging the coil or something else . any infomation would help at this point.

have you checked your fuel pumps? a bad diaphram
perhaps. when you said carbs were rebuilt, what do
you mean? complete removal, dissasmbly etc?
have you checked compression and/or spark?
a spun prop hub slipping... lots of possiblities.
don't throw money at it until you're sure what the
problem is IMHO.
good luck,
M.Y.

both carbs were completly taken off vated and all parts replaced. I just can't figure out what he was talking about charging that could make it run right until it discharged. I'm begining to wear a bald spot on my head from scratching, but thanks for the input.

Does it rev up but just not go? Tell us how it acts when on the water.

it revs up fine out of water on ear muff but on the water it just boggs downs like something is holding it back. doesn't rev all the way up and won't plane out.i hope this helps a little more.

I have a 1972 Merc (80 hp) and the only coil I
know is the charging coil. It does affect the ignition box via the fact that it raises the battery voltage to high limits if one doesn't keep lights or some load on it... the red lead
that runs the CD unit receives it's voltage from that lead as well as the battery. My best guess would be the timing, possible sheared flywheel key. Might want to pull it and check or check with timing light under load.

Jim & you're second mechanic are right. On that model Merc, the stator only charges up the battery. The ignition gets it's voltage directly from the battery - so (in theory anyway) it'll run fine even with a dead stator, at least until the battery looses charge.

My first guess would be that one or more cylinders isn't firing. Could try pulling all four plugs, grounding them well against something (so you don't hurt the ignition), and seeing if they spark while you crank the engine. Also, at that time, check if they are 'wet' (is each cylinder getting fuel). Also, how's the compression.

thanks for all the input thus far. How would i go about checking the stator. and on this model does it have a high and low side that need to be checked and how.by checking i wondering how much voltage it should be putting out on both sides.

Re: 80 hp mercury late 60's helllppp

jim thanks for the advice but please let me know if your motor is electronic ignition or not. mine still has dist. cap and coil and i dont know if this makes a difference or if it still could be the stator. also if so does that mean if the battery has a good charge will it run good until it drains down.
