I have put way to much money into this stern drive, but to change it and keep my same brand new engine (not a rebuilt) seems to be not possible ( I don't mind having the transom reworked ) but I do not want to get half way and find out I can't match up a new stern, I just had the stern rebuilt top to bottom but the other day it pop out of gear and I had no forward or reverse, so I'm feeling that this problem (had several times in the past) is electrical and not mechancial I have change the wire from under the dash to the stern drive but not the switch in the shifter handle any advise???

Re: 800 stinger electro shift

I feel your pain. I had an OMC electro-shift drive for about 12 years. It was not a very good design. I had the lower unit rebuilt 3-times, and completely changed once. It would just slip and pop out of gear. If possible I would go with another drive. You will be better off.

Re: 800 stinger electro shift

Actually your electric shift is not an 800. 800,s started in 1978 and were cable shift. The good news is that you can actually replace that outdrive with the later 800 model. I did that in 1979, still have the boat and have not had a lick of trouble. You have to intall a new control lever assy and run cables but otherwise it's a direct bolt up.

Some here will really run down even the 800 OMC. Don't beleive them. They are jealous. Just read about all of the complex problems they have with mercs.

Come on now Bondo. What you really mean is "If OMC's were the Only Out drives, you'd be broke." :D

Abrgo, sounds like Boomals got you a ticket to ride. Sounds like the way to go. They dont build boats like the one you have anymore, good luck with your project and keep us posted. Oh yeah, you should post a picture of it, I love those old Wellcrafts.

Re: 800 stinger electro shift

regarding a stringer drive popping out of gear. If it has the OMC electro-shift that you have could be the "GIMBAL MOUNT" shifter-(1970's) it may, MAY have a bad gear/throttle cutoff switch switch. This really expensive ($180.00) P.O.S. electric component was bad design and when it broke it let the drive pop out of gear at any RPM above shifting RPM...That means you'd be cruising G&T in hand and bow-candy ahoy and your boat would pop out of gear and your engine would over-rev. Also, you'd be at the dock trying to leave and the darn thing wouldn't go into gear.

I made a $2- bypass from marine wire, and a stainless toggle switch, jumped between the two affected wires, and VOILA! I can back the throttle down to trolling (1.2-2.3) M.P.H. without any fear.

If this is not your part/assembly.. please disregard.

Santa-

Re: 800 stinger electro shift

hello
dude take a pic. put it on the wal and go find an OMC cobra or better a volvo sx unit.you can use the cobra bell housing and such if you need to retain your existing engine. the electro shifts were garbage when new and the hydro-assists junkers were not really an improvement. most people here wont work on them anymore due to customer relations. I wont touch them anymore. some worked for years most failed and failed and failed yet again. dont spend much money on it whatever you do. my old one had the shift switch in the box finally failed and was NLA. I used a toggle after that. but just keep in mind that for a few coins more you can get a volvo outdrive/transom assy.
good luck and keep posting
