80hp Mariner idle question

Hi all, I have a friend with an 84 Mariner 80 hp. He says it starts and idles fine, but when he puts it in gear, it dies. He bought the boat used a month or so ago, so I dont know any other history on the problem.<br /><br />Any suggestions would be appreciated, I know it isnt much information. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the idle mixture is lean, could be adjustment or a dirty carb try adjustment first

make sure engine is idling at about 1000 rpms on muffs,should idle at about 700 rpms in the water.also maybe a good decarbon job might help,cant hurt. if basic adjs dont help then maybe a carb overhaul. good luck.. keep us posted
