Re: 80hp merc stalling when I put in gear
Budwa, Normally these motors stall when put into gear, because the idle fuel mixture is too lean. They need a richer mixture in gear than in neutral. They also need a richer mixture to accelerate than to idle in gear. I recommend you richen up the mixture by turning the idle screws 1/8 turn counterclockwise. The manual states to put the motor in gear and then adjust each mixture screw(individually) out until the engine loads up, turn each screw in until it coughs, and set it 1/2 way between. In reality, I start at initial setting on all carbs (1-1/2 turns from lightly seated), and then try to accererate. If there is hesitation, I open the top carb screw 1/8 turn. If it still hesitates, I open the middle carb screw 1/8 turn. If it still hesitates, I open the bottom carb 1/8 turn. Then repeat as necessary top to bottom, since the bottom carb runs the richest, due to gravity feed of fuel.<br />I do not thing play in the throttle is the issue.
