80s mercury out board / having troble

I just bought a boat and it has an 80s mercury out board on it. Of course it will only start in nuetral but when it starts it seems to still be in gear. It doesnt want to shift to reverse only stays in drive I think? I would appreciate any help with this matter. Thanks

Welcome to the forum! You might have more luck with this in the Mercury and Mariner section and please specify the serial number and hosepower. Is it remote control or tiller control?<br />Eric
