Hello, I have a 1981 Johnson 75hp model J75TRLCIM, when i took the boat out this year it was surging at high speed, I checked what I know, but I had a fishing trip coming up so I took to a local marina in hopes of having it fixed faster than I could do my self. When he called me back he told me that they test ran the motor and it was making alot of noise internally. He said they call that "the death rattle" and that I should just go run it till it dies, take a good paddle out with me and be on the lookout for a new motor. So basically I'm not sure what I'm suppose to do in this situation and was looking for some advice. I havent herd this noise but i'll be the first to admit I'm far from a skilled ear in this situation. So any one know what would cause this? what I could check, if I should even look into fixing this... what do you think?

If it was my mtr, I'd take it to another mechanic and get a second opinion.

Re: 81' 75hp Johnson

If anyone is interested, I did take it to another marina and got the same diagnosis. He said he agrees with the first place that it is very noisy internally, and he suspects a bearing (he named which one but I don't remember) but wouldn't know for sure unless he tore it apart. He said that I also have a cylinder not getting spark. I basically came to the conclusion that the lack of spark brought me to a shop but I can't justify paying someone to chase down an electrical issue for a motor that may or may not last very long. So the motor is on a sawhorse in my garage and I?m on my way to pick up a 2001 Johnson 90hp this afternoon. maybe someday I'll get around to rebuilding it myself, along with my many other projects haha
