I am in the process of rebuilding a used 81 25 HP Evinrude. The block is in the shop right now getting machined. I plan on putting new coils on when that part of the assembly comes to pass. My question is, what is the process for putting the wire that goes into the resin. I have a shop manual that I just received yesterday so I will follow the directions in there, but based on what I've see so far alot of the pictures aren't very ledgeable.

Also, when looking the coils up on the parts pages it's showing that both coils are to have the two posts. That is the one post that the spart plug wire connects to and the other that the wire that goes to either the kill switch or the power pack, I forget off the top of my head. My statement here is, is that only one of the coils that was on it when I bought it had the two posts. So which should it be, both coils have the two posts or only one? Thanks, in advance.

Coils basically have 3 electrical connections. One wire connects to the power pack, another to the spark plug, and a ground connection via the ground tab.

edit: Be sure to connect the top and bottom coil to the correct power pack pin.
i.e. Don't get them reversed.

Have the new coils and/or power packs done away with connecting through the resin material?

Nope, still using polymer resin as far I know.

Are you planning to take pics of your rebuild?

Ok, so the manual isn't very detailed on the installation of the coils and associated wiring. What is the process for putting the wire on that goes through the resin.

I haven't given much though about taking pics of my rebuild, but if my experiance be it a success or fail, can help someone out I suppose it's worth wile. With regards to breaking everything down, I've found it easiest to place every part and piece of a particular compenent in one pile together, seperate from the other components. So that is to say, for example, when taking all of the carburetor parts and pieces off, place all of those items together in one spot, all of the compenents for the ignition in one spot, etc. This has helped me keep track of everything for each individual compenent.

I can help with the coil connections. Your coil will be prewired with a amphenol connector pin (#43) on the end.
The rubber connector boot (#50) to the power pack has 3 pins labelled A, B and C. A is for the kill switch. B and C connects to the coils. I have to check my manual to determine which one though.
All you have to do is insert the coil connector pin (#43) into the correct position on the rubber connector boot (#50).

Oh, ok. Well that seem simple enough. Thanks.

Re: 81 Evinrude 25 HP - Ignition Coil Installation

Ok, so here is a random question. My motor is an '81 E25RCIM. Can anyone tell me whether or not this was originally both manual and electric start. The more I look into it the more I'm leaning towards it was originally a manual start only, then converted to add the electric start. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I was just curious. Anyone have any input?

omc 1979-2006 models
R - Rope start
[None] - 15in shaft
CI - 1981
M - Revision

Ok, so for the "M" you say revision. What exactly does that mean? Also, on the link you provided "M" indicates Manual Tilt Electric Start. If you can, please clarify for my own understanding. Thanks, I appreciate it.

Re: 81 Evinrude 25 HP - Ignition Coil Installation

M follows the year code in the product code so it should mean model run or suffix, and OMC does not reveal whether it includes any actual information.
(See: http://shop.evinrude.com/media/document/ModelNumberReference.pdf)

My 1980 35hp has code E35ECSM (CS = 1980) and here M would also match with manual tilt & electric start. The information provided just does not confirm it should include any additional info. And in your case the feature code R would contradict with that.

Ok. Well like I say, it was most likely converted to add the electric start. I'm in the process of rebuilding it, but before I tore it down the electric start feature worked just fine, so I don't see that this conversion does harm in anyway. Thanks.

Yes, it was an easy addition to this family of outboards. In fact I recall that electric start was listed as an add-on kit for some year models.

I reviewed the manual and installed to the best of my understanding, but can you confirm that the "A" pin is for the kill switch, the "B" pin is for cylinder #1/Top, and the "C" pin is for cylinder #2/bottom? And does it matter where the ground strap for the kill switch is grounded? Currently I have it grounded to the cylinder head cover.
