I just recieved a '81 evinrude 9.9hp outboard in a barter deal. the guy told me that the motor runs fine and that its only sat for about a year. everything seemed to be fine and clean but when i pulled on the recoil the prop turned and when i tried to shift to neutral the shifter would not move. i tried to shift and turn the prop at the same time and still stuck. i can see the rod move when you move the shifter but only about a 1/4 of an inch. i drained the lower end and found fresh clean oil so no water entry. any ideas about what may be wrong or is more info needed. thanks in advance. -matt

A shift lock out/in exists and activates when too much throttle is applied. Back the throttle off to a dead idle, then shift into neutral.

Yah, I think so. On the rudes I've messed with, that's a mechanical lockout. Try turning the throttle clear down, with the engine off, then try shifting. You may have to turn the prop or the flywheel, but it should shift out of neutral.

If it does, remember that the throttle has to below the shifting threshhold to shift.

If not, something could be bent or busted, either on the lockout mechanism or the shift linkage.

Running or not..... if in gear and too much throttle is applied, it's locked in gear.

Re: '81evinrude 9.9 stuck in forward?

well after hearing different opinions about the motor being stuck in forward i decided to drop the lower half. well after about a half ton of dirt fell out i got it apart. the shift rod is frozen in place by dirt of some type or sand. whatever it is, it's packed in there tight and thats whats holding the shift rod. plus upon inspection i found the water pump to be siezed as well so i think i will start there. thanks for the help though.

That'd do it. Clean 'er up, change the water pump, and you'll probably be OK. It's probably silt that sat and hardened up. Good luck!

Hopefully the gearcase isn't eaten away in the water pump area. Not uncommon.
