left us stranded after backfiring a couple times and stalling .. i got it started again but very hard to turn over ...died again after about 10 seconds . i have it in the driveway now but same thing ...very hard to turn over . i would be surprised if it seized as the temperature was normal ...(actually under 180) as we were not out all that long and the oil looks fine .there is no fluid mixture in the oil or coolant. i didnt hear any funny noises or vibrations ... could there be something on the outdrive holding the motor back? I will tear it down but if someone has ideas of what im looking for i would appriciate it.

Pull the spark plugs and try to spin the motor, if still tight shift into fwd and pull the drive to isolate the problem

Do what Bt Doc stated and report back

if water comes out after you pull the plugs, you hydrolocked. then you need to look for the cause

if pulling the drive frees it up, then your drive has an issue.

hi guys. thanks for the feedback ... before i heard back from you i tried to start again and she started fine and idled ok
i let it run for about 2 minutes and heard squeaking in the rear end . the upper part of the out drive got warm . i shut it down. im going to pull the out drive off tomorrow and investigate. still dont really know what to look for if you have more feedback that would be great .

hi guys ...i p[ulled the outdrive , took it into the shop and they found the upper is shot and needs a rebuild .... parts and labour will cost more than a new unit . im not sure what unit to order as the serial #s are gone off this old one . is a 470 mercury 170 hp? im not positive of the year 82 or 84 because i read a sticky on the forum it seemed to indicate the outdrive is an 82 but i thought my boat was an 84 .... i dont have the outdrive here with me so i cant count the teeth but if i ordered a 1.81 ratio would that be ok?
