'82 50hp Rude rev limiter still need answer 9/14

Is there a rev limiter on this engine? I don't have a tach on it but with just me or another light person in the boat it seems like it's rpms are just screaming. I back it down a little but with three people it sounds fine. I don't have room on my dash (14.5 ft runabout) for a tach and I hate to spend the money on a tinytach right now. Thanks.

I have an '85 50hp, and mine does about 6200 rpm if I open it up. I cruise wot at 5100. I just bought a $15 tach that attaches to the plug wire.

What kind of tach is it? I'd spend that much. 6200 is too much for this engine I'm sure of that. I'm thinking that it should be between 5100-5300 but I am not sure.

there's a link in my previous post. search ebay for "tach hour" it is a tachometer/hour meter. has one wire from it, and is self contained. I would recommend it, no wiring to connect just twist around the plug wire.

I have a 1987 150 Johnny and it does not have nor does the manual even mention such a thing; in 1988 SLOW mode was added so that you didn't burn an engine up that was overheating so I don't think you have a rev limiter on an 82.

In my 1988 OMC service manual for 2cyl 40/48/50 hp motors, the commercial model section makes a mention of power packs with a rev limit feature. Whereas the standard models do not.
