I'm a little confused about this air cooled motor. I thought there was supposed to be a telltale for the cooling water in the lower unit but when started in a tank, nothing. Looking through old posts I saw a mention of a thermostat. I haven't let this thing run more than few seconds before shutting down in order to prevent overheating. If the water needs to go through a thermostat first, that would be why I'm not seeing the spray.

This doesn't seem right as there ought to be a telltale at all times even if it's just a trickle bypassing a thermmostat. Or am I all wrong?

Are you sure its an air cooled motor? If there is an impeller, or if it has a tell tail tube, its water cooled. The lower unit needs no cooling, just the engine cylinders. Does the engine have fins all over it, or is it pretty smooth? Air cooled needs to have fins, water cooled uses a "water jacket" which would appear smooth. I am having trouble getting water as well, but I know it needs to be there!

And yes, the tell tail should always be spitting out water, t-stat closed or not.

I might be wrong on the date. It was purchased in '82 but may have been old stock or used. It's a 5M sn 661 034994. It's an air cooled motor and water cooled exhaust according to the manual. It also sez "Water will be emitted from the water outlet only when the outboard is in forward gear." Maybe there's no impeller? There's a small nozzle in front of the prop. Maybe water is forced in there and out the little holes in the lower housing? If that's how this one works, it isn't ;)

I'll try blowing some air thru that tube & see if what happens...

This is an eBay/local pickup unit that is in pretty nice shape other than the water issue and that it smokes terribly running on whatever the owner had in the tank. I hope this isn't a serious problem as I wanted this newer 50:1 motor to get away from my smokey 24:1 outboards.
