Re: 82 60 horse mercury.
Hi Rolmops

A friend used to own a nice 14ft Haines Hunter (local Aussie manufacturer) with an 82 60hp Merc. He owned the rig for 6 yrs and had absolutely no trouble with the motor. He gave it a very thourough service when he bought it though- plugs, thermostat, complete waterpump kit, gearcase seals, greasing, even pulling the head to check/clean corrosion. To his pleasant surprise, he found the water galleries to be near perfect despite it being 12 years old and used entirely in sub-tropical saltwater!- tough stuff!. After that, it was just normal, routine maintenance. He had no elec probs- the stator, rectifier, leads, CDI unit and coils were all original and functional. The control-box always worked fine. He also believed in going hard- full throttle 99.9%!. He certainly didnt baby it around- but it gave no complaints!
Eventually sold it for the same price he paid for it- with a few extra scrapes and scratches thrown in for free!.
I used to own an '81 70hp Johnson, similar motor (3cyl, loop charged induction) and had a few probs- corrosion!, and seized bolts which were way, way undersized and weak. This motor also had a hesitation off the mark which was NEVER fixed despite it seeing 3 dealers- carbs cleaned, reeds and coil leads replaced, etc, etc. I hear those OMCs carbs are touchy in regards to fuel, blockages, etc. In frustration, I sold the boat and now am the proud owner of a Haines Signature (luxury Aussie model) with a very nice Merc 135 V6. I found OMC parts to be generally dearer than Mercs.

Hope this helps
Nilsson
I have the Clymer Merc manual which covers your motor so if you have any other technical questions- fire away!.
